Dear Summer, Please Slow Down

Jul 01, 2025

I just flipped the calendar to June and already I can feel it - that familiar summer panic rising. You know the one? Where you can somehow simultaneously see today's fresh summer morning AND the 4th of July behind us shortly?

It happens every year. The last school bell rings, graduation caps fly, and suddenly we're launched into summer with all of its possibilities... and pressure. Because we know how the usual summer story goes...

  • June 1st: "This summer will be different! We'll have lazy mornings and spontaneous adventures!"
  • July 4th: "Wait, what happened to June?!"
  • August 31st: "Maybe next summer..."

But this familiar pattern has taught me something: We don't actually lose summer - we lose ourselves in the "shoulds" of summer...

  • "Should" make the most of every moment
  • "Should" plan more activities
  • "Should" create prefect memories

Should, should should...

What if, instead of racing to "make the most" of summer, we simply made the space to notice it?

Here's what I am pivoting to in mindset about summer:

1. Release the Perfect Summer Story

  • Let go of Instagram-worthy expectations
  • Accept that some days will be ordinary
  • Remember that presence beats perfection

2. Practice MORE Presence

  • Notice the sunlight across my deck in the morning
  • Feel the evening breeze
  • Taste the seasonal fruits
  • Listen to the aliveness in the neighborhood - the sounds of summer

This is your permission slip to let it go. You don't have to schedule every moment, say yes to every invitation or make every day spectacular.

You get to... have quiet mornings, keep some days open, and choose what feels right for YOUR summer.

Because here's the truth... summer isn't a performance, you don't have to perfect it... it is a season to experience, one simple moment at a time.
