When Everything Pulls: Finding Center Before the SNAP

May 07, 2025

I hadn't even had my coffee yet. Walking to grab a towel from the laundry room, I noticed the dusty machines. (UGH, I need to dust those today!) Heading back to face the kitchen's dishes, the dining room's abandoned glasses also begged for my attention. Oh, and that delivery box is STILL sitting there! Suddenly every direction held another task screaming for attention. I felt like a rubber band being stretched in multiple directions and in that moment - I wondered how long before I just SNAPPED?!

Here's what I am learning about managing these moments of competing pulls, when every task feels like another force threatening to stretch me past my limits:

1. Pause & Notice

  • take 2-3 deep breaths
  • notice where the tension is in my body
  • step away from the immediate triggers (i.e. in this case - it was time for that cup of coffee!)

2. Get Clear

  • What all is calling for my attention? Do I need to write it down to release the mental tally keeping?
  • Determine what is urgent, what is lesser importance and/or what might just be for another time altogether (remembering that not everything needs to be done right now)
  • Evaluate the time and energy I actually have to commit

3. Choose with Intention

  • Select ONE priority that matters the most
  • Release the grip of the other tasks
  • Invite help from others who share the space
  • Trust that the rest can wait

The magic isn't in doing it all - it's in choosing what deserves your energy right now and the power to release what doesn't without any guilt or shame!

What's pulling at your attention today?

How might pausing help you choose more intentionally?
