Why Does Everything Hurt? New Rules at 51.
Jul 25, 2025
For weeks I'd found my rhythm - weighted vest walks, miles tracked, scale numbers dropping. It felt energizing, motivating, and like I was finally making some progress in this midlife body game.
Then my knee started talking back.
First, little grabs of pain. Then full protests. So, I took the week off from the vest and walked the dog without. I decided to use my dumbbells, determined not to lose momentum. Within minutes, I was tired and frustrated. The next morning? My shoulders and necks were screaming as if I had done some powerful workout for an hour.
What the heck? Am I falling apart at the seams?
The nights aren't much better. I flip from side to side like a hamburger on the grill, hips aching until I cannot stand it anymore. And then there are the tears - sudden, unexplained crying after a simple walk.
At 51, I feel completely disconnected from my body. I am frustrated, overwhelmed and confused.
Here's what I am discovering:
The Old Rules Don't Apply
- What worked at 30 (or even 40) might not work now
- Our bodies need different kindness, not more punishment
- Progress looks different than it used to
The Guilt is Real (and Normal)
- Fear of losing progress can drive poor choices
- We're caught between accepting change and fighting it
- Comparison to a version of our younger abilities creates suffering
The Practice
Instead of fighting my changing body, I am experimenting with...
- Listening when it asks for rest
- Adapting to what I can do
- Celebrating every action taken (even the small steps)
- Honoring these seasons as they are
You're Not Alone
This feeling of being the only one going through it? I can bet that whatever "it" is... there are others navigating this (or similar) challenges. The tears, the frustration, the sense of betrayal by our own bodies (or minds)... it's all part of the conversation many of us are choosing to have with one another instead of hiding out. We get into all aspects of LYFE (Loving Yourself Forward Everyday) in our Community - learn more under the "Membership" tab above. If you can relate to what we are building and connecting - join us in September 2025!
After all, your body isn't failing you - it's evolving... and so are you.
