Rewriting the Role of My Inner Critic

Apr 30, 2025

Meet Roxy, My New Inner Ally...

Lately, I've been navigating a tender transition in how I see myself. The mirror reflects changes—wrinkles, evolving hair, a shift in style—that I hadn't fully embraced. I've always taken pride in presenting myself confidently, but recently, that confidence has wavered.

In the midst of this self-reflection, I realized that my inner critic, whom I've named Roxy, has been particularly vocal. She's quick to point out flaws and question those things I am noticing as flaws. But instead of silencing her, I decided to engage differently with her.

I reminded myself: Roxy is here to protect me. She is just using outdated methods to do so.

So, I decided to use AI to help me give Roxy a new job description:

Roxy - Chief Curiosity Officer & Guardian of Growth

Mission
To stop being the judgmental voice in Maggie’s head and start being the wise, fun aunt who reminds her she’s already enough—and also that play and pajama days are productive.

Key Duties Include:

  • Gently whispering “stay with her” when Maggie’s tempted to abandon herself for productivity, proving, pleasing, or perfection.
  • Celebrating every wrinkle as a laugh line, a lesson, or a reminder of wisdom.
  • Reminding Maggie of her wins; making aligned choices and taking steps toward the life she is creating.
  • Helping Maggie emerge into her next self by shining light on old stories—then helping her let go with kindness.

Qualifications & Core Skills

  • Speak up with curiosity, not criticism
  • Adept at playfulness and gentle nudges
  • Can tell the difference between danger and discomfort (and not panic at both)
  • Alignment with Maggie’s core values (especially compassion, growth, and connection)
  • A soft tone—more sage than scold

Perks of the Role

  • Occasional lavender, patchouli baths of silence
  • A voice in Maggie’s Trust Time circle
  • Creative license to say things like “what if this is actually magic in the making?”

Reporting Structure

  • Reports to: Maggie's Soul Council
  • Works alongside: Inner Child, Future Self, and Present Maggie
  • Guided by: Heart, Body, and the Occasional Oracle Card

Success Metrics

  • Maggie feels guided, not guilted
  • Roxy feels heard, not harmful
  • There’s a sense of inner teamwork, not tension

Mantra

“I stay with her. I meet her where she is. I trust the unfolding.”

I'm excited to see how this reframing will influence my self-perception and personal growth. It's a new approach, and while I don't know the outcome yet, the idea of transforming Roxy from a harsh critic to a compassionate guide feels promising.

I'm also recognizing the importance of holding space—not just for others, but for myself. Just as I strive to support my loved ones without overstepping, I'm learning to extend that same grace inward. It's about trusting the process, allowing myself to evolve, and embracing the journey with kindness.

If you're finding your inner critic overpowering, consider naming & engaging with her or him. Give them a new role, one that supports your growth rather than hinders it. Remember, self-compassion isn't a luxury; it's a necessity for your growth and transformation.

Let's continue to support each other in this journey of self-discovery and growth.
